Jose Mourinho is exactly the sort of schemer who would like to spring a couple of surprises in the transfer market this summer. But it does appear that the shortlist is becoming pretty clear for Chelsea.
Is has been widely reported over the last weeks that Chelsea want to sign Atletico pair Filipe Luis and and Diego Costa.
A Bola today reports that Atletico have set a price for the two which they will not budge on. If Chelsea want the pair then they will reportedly have to spend €64 million. A Bola says:
Atletico Madrid have warned Chelsea, who want Diego Costa and Luís Filipe, that they can only hire the two players if they pay the respective termination clauses, ie, will have to fork out around €64 million.
“Fortunately this club does not need to sell any of its players,” Gil Marin said. “Those who do not want to continue with us we can only go along with their release clause in their contracts.
“We are not going to negotiate with other clubs about the departure of players we want to stay in our team. We do not want, nor do we need, to sell any player. Whoever wants to leave Atletico must do so against the wishes of Atletico.” chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin, told ESPN.
The termination clause of Diego Costa is EUR 40 million and Luis Filipe around 24 million euros.
By termination we can assume that they mean what we call the release clause. This equates to about £50 million in total.
Even at that price we believe that it would be money well spent for Chelsea. They are desperate for a world class finisher and Diego Costa has proven his worth by leading his team to La Liga glory and the CL final this year. Luizs is a mobile and almost faultless footballer in the same mould as Ashley Cole but with a little more flair on the ball.
Let’s see Luiz in action again. Chelsea fans: Would this be money well spent?
