Arsenal

Everton and Arsenal now joint bookie favourites for £22m man

Everton look as if they going to spend most of the summer trying to recruit midfielders and forwards.

With the future of their main hitman Romelu Lukaku uncertain Everton need to add strength in depth up top.

Their defence is one of the best in The Premier League and they will expect to hold onto stars such as Seamus Coleman and John Stones.

But with Europe on the menu Everton will need a stronger squad than ever and another defender has been linked of late. Namely old boy Joleon Lescott.

After 4 years in which Lescott has become an increasingly peripheral member of the squad the player has been released by his current employer. He’s now a free agent and someone is going to get a bargain.

Skybet now have Arsenal and Everton’s joint favourites at 4/1 to sign the player this summer.

He did a brilliant job at Everton first time around and then manager David Moyes was apprehensive about letting him go – even at the top price that the club received for him.

But Arsenal are also in the running, according to the bookmaker and we wouldn’t rule out them making a move for the player because they need the odd reinforcement in defence too and Lescott is a player with proven top flight pedigree.

Lescott, who joined City in 2009 for a reported fee of £22m, could provide the sort of steel and solidity that Arsenal have regularly lacked in their rearguard over the last 5 or 6 years. Arsenal now have a decent roster of centre backs but Thomas Vermaelen may seek a move this summer and, if so, another central defender is a must.

Let’s have a look at him in action. Arsenal and Everton fans: would Lescott prove a worthy addition to your defence?

We have a new club dream-why consider turning back the clock now? IMHO we don’t need Lescott any more than we need Arteta or Rodwell. Leave them be, mayhap they’ll get a second bite of the cherry elsewhere, but not with us. Our destiny is onward, upward, and the devil take the backward-Europa next up!

If we lost vermaelen and djourou, for a fee of around £10m combined and then replaced them with Williams and lescott for £3m I would call that excellent business. That would then leave us £7m to replace stand with either aurier or richards. He’ll we could even replace monreal with Ashley Cole and be around £5m up which will help with the extra wages. A British quartet of richards, Williams, lescott and Cole for around £10m added to jenkinson, gibbs, mertesacker and koscielny will lead us to the title. Bring in valdes as also on a free leaving us the cash to sign fabregas, cavani and vela.

I agree scouse, we dont need Lescott, his best days have gone anyway! Duffy and Stones both better than him, Pennington is good as well! Roll on the fixtures and The World Cup, hope Jags & Bainesy dont let us down!
