Manchester United linked with €41m man – but do they need him?
Manchester United will surely invest heavily in the transfer market this summer. But after the disastrous and expensive signing of Marouane Fellaini last summer Manchester United can ill afford to waste more money.
We would never put Karim Benzema into the bracket of potential waste of cash but if Manchester United are going to add a striker this summer he has to be one of the top five in the world.
Because United already have two of the finest strikers on the planet in Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney. Nevertheless Benzema has been linked to a move to United this week.
If Louis van Gaal comes in to manage Manchester United then you imagine Robin Van Persie will definitely stay at the club. Meanwhile Wazza has just signed a new contract for the long term so his future is also pretty much guaranteed.
So while we could see someone like Edinson Cavani being too good a player to refuse Benzema may add little to the squad except for disruption.
Like Manchester United’s current two top strikers Benzema doesn’t particularly like playing out wide so it’s hard to imagine how he would be shoe-horned into the side.
He’s got an unerring finish on him and has scored at a rate of a goal every other game in his time at Real Madrid (111 in 230 games) who he joined for 41m Euros in 2009.
But we could see Arsenal making a much more concerted effort than Manchester United to sign the player this summer as the Old Trafford club surely need to spend the cash elsewhere.
