Newcastle: Is this GEM the striking solution?

Loic Remy has been an excellent addition to Newcastle for most of the season, adding cutting edge up front, until his injury and the inexplicable team slump of the last couple of months.

But, as Harry Redknapp suggested recently, the on-loan QPR striker will have no shortage of suitors in the summer. QPR will almost certainly lose him and Newcastle will struggle to offer him as attractive a package as he might get elsewhere – lest we forget this is a player who could be off to Brazil for The World Cup.

Newcastle will need to address their overall lack of goal threat and reports suggest that they may once more look to France for a striking solution this summer.

The Express reports:

NEWCASTLE boss Alan Pardew is weighing up a £5m bid for Monaco striker Emmanuel Riviere.

The former France Under-21 international is available this summer after falling down the pecking order since the arrival of Dimitar Berbatov.

Of course, despite the length of his contract, Alan Pardew may not get a chance to spend any more cash at Newcastle – the team form has been such that he would have been sacked by many Premier League clubs by now.

But, assuming he does ride the storm, Riviere looks like a decent bet. He scored 14 league goals in 40 games for Monaco before players like Falcao and Berbatov took centre stage. Since then he’s not had as much playing time and further investment by the moneybags French title hunters could see him edged out completely.

At 24 he’s reaching maturity and, while he hasn’t yet made the French senior side, he’s banged in the goals at every youth international level for his country.

Let’s see the lad in action.
