Turmoil never seems to be too far from Newcastle and the current slump in form is pretty much as alarming as it gets. Newcastle fans will thank the heavens that they put in a good run at the turn of the year.

But something needs to be done in the summer to give the squad much more depth and ability to handle the injuries that are part and parcel of the game.

With the departure of Yohan Cabaye in the winter Newcastle need to fill the creative vacuum in the midfield and recent reports suggest that the club may be in for Serbian midfielder Filip Đuričić. The Guardian crystallised recent reports by stating today:

Newcastle United will spend £7m on Benfica midfielder Filip Đuričić.

The Mirror said this week:

Djuricic, 22, is under contract until 2018 but Newcastle hope they can lure him to England for around £7m.

He scored an impressive 26 goals in 110 games for Heerenveen in the Dutch league before joining Benfica last year for around 6m Euros.

He’s since turned out 19 times for the Portuguese side, bagging a couple of goals. Đuričić has already played 15 times for the Serbia national side and found the net 4 times for his country.

So this is a genuine goalscoring midfielder – much more so than Cabaye. He usually plays in a more advanced role than Cabaye and loves to drive forward with the ball. But, like the Frenchman, he’s also known for making things happen in and around the box. At 22 he already has a serious amount of experience at the top level and this could help him to assimilate quickly if he did come to Newcastle.

We think that he looks like the real deal with great feet and invention. But he hasn’t yet been tested in a league of the quality of The Prem.

Let’s take a look at the lad in action. Newcastle fans – keen?
