Great news for Manchester United

Play him til he’s 40

Manchester United’s success has been built on the idea of evolution over revolution in the last quarter century.

So David Moyes could risk doing his chances as Manchester United manager even more damage if he decides to go for that cut-throat clear out this summer.

Because he may be out to buy the most talented footballers in the world. But money can’t buy the sort of spirit that Manchester United have engrained in this group over the years.

Which is why it’s great that Rio Ferdinand has stated a desire to stay at Manchester United beyond this season and, in so doing, placed the ball firmly in David Moyes’s court. The Express reports:

“I want to continue – whether that be at Manchester United or somewhere else, depending what the club want to do.

“Time will tell, we’ll have to wait until the end of the season.

“We’ll do what we did last season – wait until the end of the season, get it sorted out and speak to see where we’re at.

“Of course – that’s the dream. I’m living the dream and I’d like to continue [at United]. But we’ll have to wait and see.”

At 35 Ferdinand is in the autumn of his career – but he’s still a class player. There is still nobody else who can pass the ball out of defence at Manchester United like he can. And, beyond his on fields abilities, he has so much to offer what should be a very young Manchester United defence next season.

Ferdinand can do what Giggs and Scholes have been doing with the Manchester United squad over the last five years – playing sporadically and imparting their incredible wealth of knowledge on to the team. Players like this can give you 15 games on the pitch and invaluable mentoring to the youngsters off it.

So of course we think Ferdinand should get another year at Manchester United. It would be absolute madness to let him leave the Manchester United family in times of trouble.

Manchester United fans – do you think Rio should stay?

I do not understand how this man even gets a game in the Premier League, let alone why he would be offered a new contract. The number of times he has simply sat and watched opposition players and teammates alike play the ball is staggering. He is well past his prime. Let him go.
