Two surprise links

Most Arsenal fans are waiting for a megabucks signing for the striking department this summer.

But surely Arsenal need to add two or three strikers to the front line. We think that they will add a stellar name but also buy a couple of players who aren’t quite top tier yet. Players to add depth and quality to the squad but who won’t expect to play every single minute. Mid-priced ootballers on an upward curve.

Two such players have been linked today as reports today suggest Arsenal may be in for Jay Rodriguez and Danny Ings.

You will remember that last season he (Arsene Wenger) tried to nab Luis Suárez and Gonzalo Higuaín, and in January he had a look around but couldn’t find anyone good enough to dislodge Olivier Giroud, Nicklas Bendtner or Yaya Sanogo. Now, at last, he has found the answer: Burnley’s Danny Ings, who, unfortunately, didn’t exist in January. Wenger is also keeping an eye on Jay Rodriguez, who is, of course, out injured at the moment, though that may not discourage Arsenal.

Tongue back out of cheek, these two could represent really shrewd acquisitions.

Not many players can make the step up from The Championship to The Premier League but we believe is one who could.

After his scintillating form this season he will surely get a shot at the big time because he has the guile and imagination which could set the top tier alight. He’s got 25 goals in 40 games for Burnley this season.

Meanwhile Rodriguez (17 goals in 39 games for Southampton this season) has been a revelation on the south coast and was an outside bet for the World Cup squad before injury ended his season.

We think they could both do a job at Arsenal – but as a supplement to a new stellar striker and not a substitute for one.

So he’s only a couple of months old, then?
