Tottenham: Seismic Transfer Developments – Good and Bad news?

Striker news

Tottenham need a new talisman up front – someone who can do a Klinsman, a Sheringham or a Berbatov for the club.

It was generally assumed by the media that the next big addition to Tottenham’s attack would either be Chelsea’s on loan balletic battering ram Romelu Lukaku or Aston Villa’s similarly muscular Christian Benteke.

But that shortlist looks as if it may be shortened further with news today that Benteke has a serious injury. The BBC writes:

Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke has been ruled out for a minimum of six months with a ruptured Achilles tendon.
The 23-year-old Belgium international will have surgery on the injury sustained in training and will miss this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

It’s a bitter blow for the player, especially in a World Cup season. Benteke scored 23 goals in his first season at Villa and has 11 to his name in this campaign. While he may have been ‘sussed out’ to a degree by Premier League defenders, he remains a player of technical quality, power and precision with the odd cheeky flick thrown for good measure.

He seemed like an attainable target for Tottenham but the club may now pursue their interest in Lukaku. If anything Lukaku appears to have even more potential than his countryman.

The Guardian reported last night that Lukaku’s agent has confirmed talks with Tottenham.

“I’m looking for a club for Romelu,” Henrotay said. “And yes, I’ve talked to Daniel Levy once, but that doesn’t mean Romelu will definitely join Spurs. That’s not a talking point at this moment.

Tottenham fans, would you take Lukaku, Benteke or another player entirely for the front line, given the choice?
