You can see it happening. Slowly, yet at a constant pace, Chelsea are beginning to look like a Mourinho team again. Their decision to sell Juan Mata really sums it up. Out go some of the luxuries – the technical geniuses who may offer regular moments of brilliance but won’t necessarily conform to Mourinho’s team ethic.
And in come the powerhouses and monster athletes who will run themselves into the ground and make the team more solid and difficult to beat – players like Nemanja Matic were made for a Mourinho team.
But this Chelsea is still a work in progress. They need to be more solid still and they also require more cutting edge up front. While Chelsea aren’t exactly bereft of strikers, with Torres, Eto’o and Ba on the books, you feel that Mourinho is looking for another talisman to lead his next vintage on to success – another Drogba.
News today suggests that Chelsea may be closer to bringing a sensational striker into the club. The Metro, among others, opines that Edinson Cavani wants to leaves PSG this summer and that a switch to Chelsea could be a possibility.
Jose Mourinho has stayed quiet on those suggestions, but agent and friend Francois Gallardo says Cavani is deeply unhappy at PSG and could move on in the summer.
‘There is a player of the squad at PSG who is not comfortable and wants to leave called Cavani,’ said Gallardo.
‘If clubs want to sign him – it would soon be time to make a move.’
Cavani is used to playing in Italy – one of the most competitive leagues in the world. Going from that to a league which, in terms of competition, is akin to Scotland, could be difficult for some to take. While he is being extremely well remunerated in Paris, he may wish to return to a cut and thrust league where adrenalin courses through the veins prior to kick off.
He would certainly find that in England and we could easily imagine him ending up at Chelsea. He’s a player with wonderful technique but he also has the sort of solid physique that would suit Mourinho’s style of play. Cavani can score wonderful goals but also put it about a bit when necessary.
Let’s see the lad in action. Chelsea fans, is this the dream summer signing?
