Now this one would be a real bobby dazzler. A fillip. A tonic. The perfect antidote to the current malaise at Manchester United.
And, make no mistake, it is still officially a malaise. A draw away at high flying Arsenal isn’t too bad on its own. But when taken in context it’s yet another game where Manchester United dropped much needed points, as Champions League football disappears over the horizon, with Liverpool the likely benefactors. Does it get any worse? I suppose Rooney to Manchester City would just about trump that.
Well, the word on the street over the last few days will give Manchester United fans a little lift, while perhaps raising other questions.
Following up on the recent claims, The Daily Mail today reports that Manchester United are currently in pole position to sign a genuine world class star. They say:
Chelsea have considered Edinson Cavani but Manchester United are favourites at this stage for his signature so long as they improve their form and finish the season with a flourish.
You would have thought that one of the few areas that doesn’t need immediate attention is the forward line. But with doubts remaining over the future of Wazza Rozza and RvP looking unusually glum, for one who takes home in the region of a quarter of a million squid a week, there may well be a hole in the forward line come summer.
But, even if Rob and Roo do stay you can always make space for a player of Cavani’s quality. A year ago we would have rejected the idea of his transfer to Manchester United immediately. But, having reportedly bid £90m plus for Bale, the purse strings are clearly loosing at Old Trafford. After years of success you would imagine that, despite the debt, Manchester United have some serious cash reserves to call on.
What can we say about Cavani that hasn’t already been noted? Known as The Matador, due to his penchant for killing bulls (not really), Cavani has scored 173 goals in 314 career appearances. The frightening thing is that he seems to still be improving. He doesn’t mind a tap in but certainly loves the more sensational strikes – of which he has many.
Let’s see the magician in action. Manchester United fans, could you fit him in alongside RvP and Rooney?
