Through the January window Manchester United and Chelsea both seemed very keen to sign Southampton’s super left-back Luke Shaw. With Ashley Cole and Patrice Evra coming to the end of their majestic careers Shaw looks like a sensational successor.
Nothing came of the rumours in the winter window but Shaw looks certain to leave for either Chelsea or Manchester United in the summer.
The latest reports suggest that it won’t just be Shaw that these great clubs do battle for in the close season.
The Daily Mail reports that:
Chelsea were once again among clubs represented at PEC Zwolle’s game against Ajax on Sunday.
The Stamford Bridge club were joined by scouts from Manchester United, City and Arsenal as they continue to monitor Ajax defender Joel Veltman.
The kid is being coached by Jaap Stam and if he turns out anywhere near as good as the Manchester United legend then Ajax have a serious player on their hands. Stam was an absolute machine for Manchester United.
The Mail continues:
Described by Frank de Boer as ‘Not Veltman but a veldheer (a general)’ following a man-of-the-match performance against Celtic in November
They also report that coach Marc Overmars is adamant that the player will not be allowed to leave. But, sadly for the Dutch league, English and Spanish clubs have a tendency to lure Holland’s best on a regular basis.
Deft of touch and fleet of foot, yet already strong as an ox, Veltman made his debut for Holland seniors last year after playing at every youth level for his country. He’s only played 11 times for Ajax but already looks the business. We think he’s got all the tools for top clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea.
