Chelsea look to be busy in the window

The news that Nemanja Matic may well be joining Chelsea in the coming days has surprised few people, even though Jose Mourinho had stated that transfers were unlikely in this window.

We wouldn’t be at all surprised if Chelsea also bought a striker and a defender in January. Roman Abramovich will be more than happy to loosen the purse strings if it means another tilt at a Champions League trophy come May.

But with the FIFA fair play regulations kicking in imminently Chelsea are one of those clubs in danger of not being able to balance the books – as well as buying in more major players they may well have to sell.

One player who has been persistently linked with a move away from The Bridge is Brazilian David Luiz. The 26 year old draws vastly different opinions depending on who you speak to but he seems to remain popular with the Chelsea faithful. That said, he has made some high profile defensive errors and we know that Mourinho put a huge emphasis on defenders defending first and foremost – especially his centre-backs – additional qualities are an unnecessary bonus.

Luiz has also been played in a defensive midfield role but it does seem as if he would be more suited to Spain where less emphasis is placed on the actual defending and more on individual skill.

Marca today reports that the player would be available at around 35m Euros. Marca says:

Barça previously made a bid of €25 million for the player, but it was turned down by Chelsea and a new offer for him in the summer will not be cheap if the club wants to sign him.

Mourinho is not totally against selling the defender, but he will certainly not sell him on the cheap. The player’s price-tag would be around €35 million.

We believe that Chelsea will eventually release Luiz. If, as is being reported, Chelsea do bring in at least one more defensive midfielder then Luiz will have to slug it out for a centre-back berth.

Chelsea fans would you like to keep the talented Brazilian or is he just too much of a liability in defence?
