While most Premier League teams have kept their gunpowder dry so far in the winter window you feel it’s just a matter of time before the transfer heavens open – having predicted a particularly busy month in the market we certainly hope so anyway.

While we regularly laud the contribution that Brendan Rodgers has made to the Liverpool team since he arrived, some fans of the club are quick to remind us that his transfer business hasn’t been an unbridled success story.

Rodgers has brought in some absolute gems but there have also, arguably, been quite a few expensive mistakes. Stan the man recently commented on soccersweep:

Just look at the £55.000.000 Million Pound wasted on Allen, Borini, Assaidi, Aspas, Alberto, Ilori (SIMPLY SHAMBOLIC SIGNINGS ALL)

Fair point?

So despite Liverpool’s great form this season Rodgers’ transfer activity is still the subject of much scrutiny.

How about Martin Montoya then? Yet another product of the Barcelona star sculpting department the 22 year old has turned out 33 times (1 goal) for the senior side since his debut in 2011 – no shame in that. But he hasn’t found a regular place in the side and has been persistently linked to Liverpool in recent times.

In November The Guardian reported that:

Liverpool have opened talks with Barcelona over the possible transfer of the defender Martín Montoya in January.

The player’s agent said a few days ago:

“At the moment everything is stopped [regarding a renewal with Barcelona],” said Orobitg, speaking to Tutto Mercato.

“The situation is clear – if we cannot reach an agreement on a new contract, Montoya will be free to find a new club. It’s a complicated situation.

Bookmaker SkyBet have opened a market on Montoya moving clubs in January. Liverpool are favourites, at 5/1, for his signature.

Let’s see the lad in action. Liverpool fans, do you rate this guy?
