With Celtic a country mile clear of the opposition at home, and out of The Champions League, you might imagine that they would be indifferent about the idea of bringing in new talent in January. But that would be to understate the drive and professionalism of their manager Neil Lennon.

Having proliferated Celtic’s success over the last few years the fire clearly burns as brightly as ever within Lennon. He will perennially seek to improve his team and make them more feared in Europe.

One player who has often been linked with Celtic of late is Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher. It wasn’t until Fletcher joined his current club from Wolves in 2012 that the wider public really began to properly appreciate the quality of the player. Sadly, injury soon blighted his career under Martin O’Neill, and he took a long time to come back to the boil.

But, while Fletcher may not be able to count on lightning pace or power, his sense of precision is extraordinary. He’s great with both feet and brilliant with his head. Add those qualities to a wonderful spacial awareness and, at 26, Fletcher has become one of the more efficient players in The Premier League.

A few days ago, ex-Hoops striker Chris Sutton spoke of the impact that such a player could have on Celtic. He told The Daily Record:

IT’S literally the million dollar question. Can Celtic prise Steven Fletcher away from Sunderland and give their fans, players and staff a timely New Year boost?

It would also be a terrific statement of intent from the board at a time when the club has arrived at a crossroads.

English bookmaker Bet Victor have installed Celtic as favourites to sign the Shrewsbury born Scotland international in January. The odds of 4/1 suggest it could be a goer but that Celtic will have their work cut out to sign a player from a club that is clinging on for dear life to their Premier League status.

Celtic fans – would you like to see Fletcher in the green and white come February?

I think the addition of Fletcher would be good. With others in the comments suggesting the capture of Rhodes or Finnbogason would be better, both of these players have a price tag of minimum of £8m by their clubs, respectively. Personally I would also prefer either of these players but their transfers may be a bit out of reach as yet. However, I do love the fact that Lennon is buying home grown talent. Hopefully he can secure most of Dundee Utd’s youngsters.
