Stories are already flying around the press about who Manchester United might sign in January.
The most cynical may think that if United couldn’t do the deal they wanted, in the three months they had during the summer, then they will really struggle in the winter window.
With it being a pre-World Cup season, players might be less inclined to change clubs mid-term, as it might harm their international chances. Furthermore top players, at top clubs, will be cup-tied for European competitions. So the market, at this time of year, is fraught with complications.
Nevertheless Portuguese news media outlet A Bola today reports that Manchester United are lining up a €63 million double bid for Real Madrid pair Angel Di Maria and Sami Khedira in January.
Manchester United where said to be interested in Khedira during the summer as David Moyes desperately tried to bring in more midfielders. And winger Di Maria has been linked with Manchester United in the past.
‘Manchester United is already thinking about the winter market’
and that the club ‘intends to reinforce’ with ‘Khedira and Di Maria’.
David Moyes has been closely monitoring the two Real Madrid players in the rout (7-3) against Sevilla (11. Matchday), Khedira is one of the priorities in the reopening of market with Manchester willing to offer 42 million euros for German.
Di Maria is another reinforcements intended for Moyes, while the English club to consider pay around 21 million euros for the Argentine international, for a total of 63 million by the two players of Real Madrid.
Whilst we aren’t great fans of Di Maria – he goes missing and falls over too often – we could understand Moyes trying to improve in the wide areas, where Young, Nani and to a lesser degree, Valencia have been off the pace. But we still think that Wilfried Zaha represents a brilliant prospect on the right – he just needs to be given the chance to shine.
As for Khedira it just makes no sense. He’s a box to box type in terms of athleticism but he won’t add finesse to the attacking third of the pitch and won’t unlock a defence with a sublime pass. Manchester United have Fellaini, Cleverley, Jones and Carrick to do the more defensive and physical jobs in midfield. What they need now is a pass master – which Khedira isn’t.
So, in summary, we would suggest that the report is either far-fetched or David Moyes has got his transfer priorities completely wrong.
What do you Manchester United fans think? Are these two what United need?
