Chelsea in surprise hitman link

Chelsea never seem to go for a low profile player and if they do that player rarely makes it through the ranks

It seems that every time a transfer is rumoured at Chelsea it is for a player of world renown.

The moneybags club never seem to go for a low profile player and if they do that player rarely makes it through the ranks. I’m sure you Chelsea fans out there will take me to task on this one but it’s hard to think of too many kids or inexpensive signings that have made the grade at the club in the last decade.

But perhaps that’s all about to change as Chelsea have been linked to a lower profile player in the latest new cycle.

The Daily Star, among others, today suggests that Chelsea are interested in buying the West Brom striker Saido Berahino. Berahino, who made his name by scoring the winner against Manchester United Old Trafford a couple of weeks ago, is having a superb season.

Consequently West Brom manager Steve Clarke is desperate to tie the player down to a new lucrative contract. But the tabloid today suggests that Chelsea Everton and Arsenal are sniffing around like a dog on heat. The Star says:

WEST BROM manager Steve Clarke is hoping to conclude contract talks with Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton target Saido Berahino as soon as possible.

“We are in negotiation with his representatives and if I was the club I’d get it done as soon as possible,” Clarke said.

Under the terms of that current contract Berahino could leave the Baggies for as little as £300k.

The 20-year-old has played seven times this season for West Brom after being loaned out to various lower division clubs for the last couple of years. He does have an excellent scoring record though, with 18 goals in 46 appearances, in his short career.

Let’s see him in action and Chelsea fans let us know what you think. Is he good enough to wear The Blue or is he just a flash in the pan?
