Manchester United: Striker deal close to completion!

DB: As slow as a snail on sensi

After a mixed few years at Manchester United, where his confidence was persistently battered, it is being reported that Dimitar Berbatov has finally found another club.

Such is the fall from grace of the player, that he seemed unable to find a suitor, even when his transfer fee was set at a comparatively lowly £5m. But The Guardian is now suggesting, with some confidence, that Fiorentina have met that valuation and that the Bulgarian is flying to Italy to seal the move.

Berbatov scored many goals for Manchester United but largely did so at home against lesser opposition. He seems to have suffered at a time when speed has become the most important quality of a Premier League striker. Most of Manchester United’s strikers have pace to burn in a team which is built on the idea of fast counter attacks but, too often, Dimitar wanted to slow the game down to a walking pace.

He undoubtedly has a great touch but his style, along with a sense of self doubt that is wholly unwelcome at Manchester United, proved to be his undoing.

On the surface Serie A should suit his style of play and the footballing world can be treated to the odd bit of sublime skill from the Bulgarian. He will leave the club with the best wishes of the fans but, on a footballing level, he won’t be too badly missed.
