Manchester United: Wenger and Ferguson in RVP talks

What is it about Manchester United and painstakingly protracted transfers? You could hardly call Manchester United fans ‘long suffering’ after the incredible and sustained success that they have enjoyed over the last two decades. But the way that transfers have been conducted over the last few years is making the summer months a difficult time for supporters.

The latest soap style saga is of course the on-off transfer of Robin Van Persie to Manchester United.

The Mail piped up again last night with a story that suggested Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex had suspended their ‘feud’ to have a one to one chat about the Van Persie situation. All of the speculation points toward a deal being possible at the right price but neither manager seems to be able to agree on what the right price is. The Daily Maul says

‘Sir Alex Ferguson has held private discussions with Arsene Wenger over Manchester United’s attempts to complete a dramatic swoop for Robin van Persie.

And Sportsmail understands Arsenal are expecting an improved offer following personal contact between the two managers which took place recently.

Sources say that a deal to take the Arsenal captain, who got 30 goals to win the golden boot last season, to Old Trafford could be completed by the time the season kicks off this weekend.’

I think that a swift deal would now be best for all parties. Arsenal fans have a bitter taste in their mouths which will only subside when Van Persie moves. The Dutchman himself cannot be enjoying this period either. And Manchester United need to know whether to pursue other targets.

All in all, it’s messy – but hopefully an end is in sight. As one insightful soccerweep reader commented that if Sir Alex is happy to pay £30m+ for the untested Lucas Moura then why can’t he fork out £25m for a world class finisher who has already done it in the Premier League? Sell on value aside, Fergie needs to get this done if Manchester United are to be competitive domestically and in Europe.

Rooney and RVP up front is simply a mouth watering prospect which will prove to be very successful and bring the Premiership back where it belongs at Old Trafford!!
