He hasn’t had a lot of game time during EURO 2012 but I couldn’t help but be impressed by Italy’s attacking midfielder Sebastian Giovinco during his fleeting appearances for the national team in Poland and Ukraine.
Though enoying a decent profile in Italy he hasn’t become a household name in Europe, mainly because he hasn’t played a lot of Champions League football. The tiny attacking midfielder is a product of the Juventus youth system but has spent large chunks of the last 4 years on loan at Empoli and, latterly, Parma. Last season the impish magician scored 15 goals in just 36 appearances for the club.
At 25 you couldn’t confidently state that he’s simply being blooded elsewhere before cementing his place in the first eleven of The Old Lady. But his superb form and fitness over the last year will obviously give Juventus food for thought.
If his signature could be negotiated however, Giovinco would thrive in the Premier League. He’s technically gifted, mobile and more energetic than Keith Chegwin on chang. Think of him as a more explosive version of Middlesbrough legend Juninho. Giovinco looks perfect for the modern game.
After playing so consistently last season he won’t come cheap but I think that this kid could be a sensation in England and would add further punch to the creative midfield areas at Manchester United. This guy could more than make up for the disappointment of losing Eden Hazard to Chelsea.
