There are continued rumours that Nicolas Gaitan is on his way to Manchester United in the summer for around £30 million. That more than one broadsheet newspaper reported on talks between the clubs back in December suggests that this is more than just idle speculation. The Mirror followed up last week with another story about the link.
The young Benfica winger certainly looks like a proper player but the Portuguese league is a very different beast to the EPL. Nani and Anderson came from Sporting and Porto respectively back in 2007 but still generate hot debate as to their worth at United, four and a half years on.
That said, Gaitan looks like exactly the sort of rare talent that United fans crave. A natural wide man who also likes to cut inside, he has quick feet, an abundance of flair and a great eye for goal. If he does come to United, one might wonder as to whether he will have the success of Ronaldo, Nani or Bebe? In Argentina he has actually been most regularly likened in style to the legendary playmaker Juan Riquelme. So perhaps his future lies more in the centre of the park. Time will tell, but his youtube videos are great fun to watch nonetheless.
