Tottenham: Could Gareth Bale Out?

Tottenham Hotspur have always had good players. Flair players who uphold the attacking traditions of the club. The problem for Spurs over the last 30 years is that, whilst always playing entertaining football, they have never managed to cement a place in the English elite. They have threatened to do so on many occasions but never cracked it for any length of time.

The teams that, at different times, included Clive Allen, Gary Lineker and Jurgen Kilnsmann, glimpsed success. And, last year, Tottenham had a Champions League run which was immensely enjoyable to the viewer – but probably to the detriment of Spurs’ final league position.

Under the stewardship of Harry Redknapp, Tottenham look to be getting ever stronger and certainly have the potential to join the top four on a more permanent basis but, until they reach the Champions League every year, they will always be susceptible to unwanted transfer speculation with regards their top players. Until Tottenham become an elite club, others will always attempt to swoop for their superstars – a classic catch 22 situation.

In the summer Luka Modric had his head turned by Chelsea. He looked almost certain to leave after handing in a transfer request. But Spurs and Harry stood firm and are now reaping the vast benefits of a player with his mind back on the job. Whether he would want to move to an ailing Chelsea now is highly unlikely, but the warning signs were there.

If Harry Redknapp stays at the club beyond the summer, Spurs have every chance of continuing to retain their stars, but a much vaunted departure to the helm of the England team could spell further trouble for the North London team just as the golden egg is about to be laid once more.

Gareth Bale is possibly having an even better season than his last. If last season he was brilliant, this year he is consistently brilliant. Scoring goals, tearing apart defences, coming inside from his hitherto wide position and showing the touch of a world class star – the Welshman has come of age.

He has spoken already of an attraction to the Spanish league and, despite what would surely be a mammoth transfer fee, there would be no lack of English suitors should he give any indication of his desire to leave Tottenham. He would almost certainly improve any team in the world – and you can even include Barcelona in that equation.

I don’t see why Bale would want to leave Spurs. He has everything there at the moment. A  really good team on the up and a top manager who understands and encourages him in all the right ways. His career ain’t broke so why try to fix it?

In all likelihood the future of Bale and Spurs is inextricably linked with the future of Harry Redknapp. If Redknapp stays, Tottenham will surely start winning big trophies and retain their best players. But if Harry takes on the England job, the futures of Bale and Modric look less certain.

Reasonable article but nothing new here, speculation will always follow Spurs. It’s not necessariy true that should Redknapp leave Spurs to take up the England post (if offered), the super stars like Bale, Modric etc will follow him out the door. It really is dependent on who ever takes his place in the hot seat and may I remind you, Daniel Levy will have a hell of a lot to say on the matter. It is true to say that the players at Spurs plays for Redknapp but equally, they are playing for each other as well, the chemistry is there for all to see. It wasnt Redknapp who persuaded Modric to stay, it was Daniel Levy’s tough stance, Redknapp in all probability would have sold him as he said often enough that you cant have a disgruntled player in your dressing room. These players know what the Chairman is trying to do for this club and it is a huge club. As much as I’ve grown to not only accept Redknapp but like him as well, I have to say that he isnt the messiah and no individual is bigger than the club, any club worldwide. If Redknap does decide to leave, he will not only leave unfinished business but miss the day to day contact with his players, tempation is a wicked thing and he will be stuck between a rock and a hard place. Arsenal had the problem over their star player, one Cesc Fabrigas but Barca was too strong a pull for him to return home, Nasri’s departure was just plain old fashioned greed. Neither of these factors could be levelled at Bale. It would nevertheless be interesting to see what happens but remember, there will always be THFC.

“I don’t see why Bale would want to leave Spurs.” – So why are you suggesting it then!?

I am shocked the way we have allowed AVB to turn Chelsea Fc to tatters. He obviously does not know where is going because the players he is buying are not fit for the roles they bought them for.
