So we are a third of the way through the month and, while there has been an awful lot of posturing, no big deals have yet been done. It is as if all the Premier League managers have forgotten what an absolute nightmare it was trying to sign players last-minute during the summer window.
But it is easy to imagine that the selling clubs would want to wait until towards the end of the window to push up the prices of their star turns. We still feel the Arsenal could well spend big in the January window in an effort to bring in another stellar player. They don’t need a lot of extra bodies but they do need a bit of added class up front.
A player who has regularly been mentioned in relation to Arsenal is Diego Costa of Atletico Madrid. With the Spanish club doing so well this season Arsenal are going to have a struggle to sign the player in January.
But The Star today reports that the board is backing The Frenchman with the £30m or so that it will require to snare the player known as ‘The Beast’ as Diego Simeone reportedly calls his superb striker.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been given the full backing of owner Stan Kroenke and the board to splash the cash and is understood to be willing to spend over £30m to land the Brazilian ace.
He may not be quite as good as Arsenal’s summer target Luis Suarez. But he’s a really top drawer player who rarely goes missing and can make the difference in even the tightest of games. There is little doubt that Arsenal would be getting another world class talent if they managed to snare Costa.
Let’s see the lad in action. Arsenal fans, is this realistic January deal?
