Manchester United: The mother of all transfers

When asked a few years back about the limits of his transfer kitty, Sir Alex confidently asserted that the only player he would shell out £60m for was the recently departed Cristiano Ronaldo. Well, if recent stories coming out of Spain and Portugal are to be believed, the Manchester United boss may soon get the opportunity to do just that.

As we all know by now, Mr.Ronaldo has recently said that he is ‘sad’ at Real Madrid. After stating only recently that he would happily re-sign at Real for life, something has occurred within the famous walls of the Bernabeu which has apparently changed his thinking.

“I am sad and the club knows it, that’s why I didn’t celebrate the goals. The people in the club know why.”

Despite his talent, riches and good looks, Ronaldo is somoene who needs a lot of love. He needs to feel wanted and appreciated by his contemporaries. At this moment, he clearly doesn’t.

Although Ronaldo won’t go into specifics, there are two main schools of thoughts about why he is dismayed. Firstly, with three years to run, he hasn’t been offered a contract extension as yet. Others think that he has been ostracised by his team mates, Teenwolf style.

The likelihood is that Real will pull their fingers out and get an extension sorted. Ronaldo must be the most important player that has joined the club since Zidane. But, once Ronnie started the ball rolling in 2007 with his departure from Manchester United, the move was inveitable. Although Fergie made him stay a little longer, we all knew instinctively, from the moment he started making vague public comments about god and his future, that he would eventually leave.

Perhaps, he has reached the same tipping point at Real. But if he did leave there are only a few destinations that he could feasibly end up at.

The Homecoming

Despite their highly publicised financial problems, Manchester United would simply have to make a bid for Ronaldo if he became available at a decent age. Ronnie loved the club and the club loved Ronnie. He fits into United’s style perfectly and he loved playing at United. It’s a second home to him.

The Treachery

If Ronnie left Real he could not move to another English club outside United, without all hell breaking loose. Ronnie has sometimes shown slightly mercenary instincts but surely, surely, he has enough respect for Manchester United, the boss and the fans to stay out of the clutches of Manchester City or even Chelsea…

The Moderate Mercenary

Recently minted PSG and Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala are the only other clubs that could possibly fund such a transfer. Neither league offers great competition but it wouldn’t be beyond the realms of imagination to envisage Ronaldo living in Paris. Somehow though, it doesn’t seem likely.

For our money Ronnie will stay at Real for some time yet. If he does return to England it simply has to be with United. Perhaps Jose will bring him back if he takes the helm at Old Trafford.
