Manchester United in big money playmaker link

Manchester United still need better quality in the centre of midfield. Nothing new there…

Manchester United gave a sterling performance at the weekend which said much for their heavily criticised defence.

Vidic and Evans and then Jones and Evans held on, despite waves of second-half pressure from Arsenal, which looked as if it could well result in an equaliser. But in our opinion it’s not a defence which needs major improvement.

The reason why the backline has been under the microscope this season is because Manchester United can’t keep the ball in midfield. So the defence is under pressure much more often. But United have quality in numbers back there so they really don’t need to spend urgently on the defence.

What they do need is better quality in the centre of midfield. Carrick is getting older and nobody else is really up to scratch. Manchester United desperately need to invest in a really top-quality attacking midfielder.

Schools of names being thrown around pertaining to this problem area. The Guardian today suggests that Manchester United may make a bid for the brilliant Borussia Dortmund player Marco Reus.

The Guardian says:

Manchester United want to bring Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marco Reus to Old Trafford and might be tempted to trigger the £30m release clause the German club has revealed is contained in his contract. The highly sought after German international is signed up with Dortmund until 2017, but with Arsenal and United making little secret of their interest in him, Dortmund will offer their man a substantial pay rise on condition the release clause is removed from his contract. In their efforts to bring Reus to Old Trafford, Manchester United are reported to be offering to send Shinji Kagawa back to Dortmund in an effort to sweeten any prospective deal.

If we had £30m to spend on Manchester United’s behalf we would probably go for Reus’ team mate Ilkay Gundogan. Nevertheless Reus is an excellent attacking player with great technique and wonderful athleticism. It’s hard to debate the idea that he would improve Manchester United’s midfield.

Let’s have a look at him in action. Manchester United fans would this be the answer to the midfield problems?
