Liverpool – what the papers say about Liverpool’s potential new signing

While Arsenal search for a striker and Manchester United a creator, Liverpool will are now in the business of finding eventual replacements for Steven Gerrard – a box to box dynamo who also adds a significant number to the goals for column each season – no easy task, of course, but that shouldn’t ever be a reason not to try.

Liverpool are regularly linked with midfielders but the name of Will Hughes has persisted in much of the recent transfer speculation pertaining to Anfield.

The Derby County midfielder and England youth international has been in imperious form for the last year and it’s drawn the attention of many more clubs than Liverpool. Perhaps it’s this growing interest which sees Liverpool reportedly showing some urgency to get him sooner rather than later.

The Guardian today reports that Liverpool are hot on the trail of the youngster:

England U-21 international Will Hughes is on his way to Liverpool from Derby County for £12m, according to rumours emanating from the Anfield area

Meanwhile The Express says:

LIVERPOOL manager Brendan Rodgers is poised to clinch the signing of £12million Derby County wonderkid Will Hughes – leaving Arsene Wenger and David Moyes out in the cold.

…the 18-year-old finally looks to be on his way out of Pride Park after Liverpool agreed to meet the Rams’ £12m asking price.

…and The Metro:

The Reds have been pursuing the highly-rated England Under-21 international all year and narrowly missed out on landing their man in the summer.

Hughes has also attracted the attention of Manchester United and Arsenal but Anfield manager Brendan Rodgers is now confident a deal will be wrapped up in January.

Whether Hughes will go on to become a goal-scoring midfielder remains to be seen – he has 5 goals in 53 games for Derby County – not a bad return for a youngster but midfielders tend to take time to find their scoring boots in the big leagues.

What Liverpool would be acquiring is a technically adept player with such a good touch that he always looks as if he has time on the ball. At 18, you imagine he would go back on loan for a short spell, while he develops physically.

Liverpool fans, a good buy or would you rather get a more mature player to affect the team right now?
