John Terry fittingly took centre stage at Chelsea’s homecoming as the Blues eventually saw off Watford 4-3.
A late goal from Stefano Okaka looked to have earned the Hornets a point, before Cesc Fabregas won it two minutes from normal time.
It was Terry who got proceedings underway, though, and in the most comical of fashions.
The club captain scored at one end before gifting Watford a goal at the other just moments later.
Antonio Conte was able to hand the centre-back a rare start, his side already having wrapped up the Premier League title with a 1-0 win over West Brom on Friday night.
It was always going to be an emotional occasion for the former England international, who barring an early loan spell at Nottingham Forest, has spent his entire career at Stamford Bridge.
Perhaps the significance of that has started to dawn on him, and he dropped a surprising hint on his future after the game.
“I know I said I wanted to play regular football while I can, but I’ve still not ruled out Sunday being my last game and retiring from football,” he said, quoted via the Mirror.
“It depends if the right offer comes along. I’ll sit down and consider it with my family, whether that’s here or abroad or wherever that may be.
“Genuinely I haven’t made any decisions as of yet and I’m just evaluating all my options at the moment.
“I never wanted to hang about and stop the progress of a younger player – that was the basis of my decision.”
Terry’s time in west London – and maybe on the pitch – is almost up, though he is set to make one final appearance this Sunday against Sunderland.
