Watch: Schweinsteiger’s leaving message as he heads for MLS

Bastian Schweinsteiger’s ill-fated stint at Manchester United is finally coming to an end.

The former Germany international has signed a one-year deal with MLS outfit Chicago Fire, as reported in the Chicago Tribune.

To be fair to the World Cup winner, his determination to prove himself to Jose Mourinho was admirable, but he could have left in the summer and given himself another year of playing.

Talks with the Fire have been ongoing for some time, and United will now allow him to link up with them straight away, subject to a medical and a visa.

Mourinho has repeatedly tried to freeze him out, perhaps in some vain hope that he’d get the message that he was surplus to requirements.

Amazingly, though, after spending the early part of the season training with the reserves, he was recalled and did feature for the first team in the EFL Cup against West Ham.

He received a warm reception in that game, so he clearly still has a great rapport with the fans despite never making much of an impact.

Basti posted a heartfelt message to the United faithful on his Twitter page:
