The fee Man United and Chelsea are willing to pay for Gareth Bale

It’s almost four years since Gareth Bale became the most expensive player in the world by joining Real Madrid.

The Welshman left Tottenham in the summer of 2013 to head to the Bernabeu in an £85million deal, but it looks as if he could be about to break another record.

That’s according to reports in Spain, particularly in Don Balon.

The newspaper have it that both Manchester United and Chelsea would like to bring Bale back to the Premier League, despite Real having big plans of their own for the superstar.

With Cristiano Ronaldo now 31, Los Blancos are thought to see the 27-year-old as his natural successor.

Yet, that could change if United or Chelsea offer £172million, the fee being reported in today’s Sun.

Madrid are on course to win La Liga this season, and if they do, Bale will have completed his trophy haul in Spanish football.

It may be a point of frustration, though, that in his time at Tottenham, all he won was the 2008 League Cup.

For the first time in 20 years, an English club broke the transfer record last summer, when Manchester United signed Paul Pogba for £89million.

Any deal for Bale would definitely eclipse that sort of money, but United certainly have it to spend.
