Liverpool hoping Augsburg defender can resolve crisis

Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Ragnar Klavan from Augsburg.

The Guardian report that the Estonia captain is set to move to Anfield in a deal worth £4.2million, with the 30-year-old providing cover at centre-back.

Klavan is an extremely versatile player, as he is also able to play at left-back and in central midfield, but Jurgen Klopp is primarily interested in his signature because he can provide cover for Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren.

The Reds have allowed Kolo Toure and Martin Skrtel to leave, while Joe Gomez and Mamadou Sakho have both suffered Achilles injuries.

That has left Klopp’s central defence looking worryingly sparse, so Klavan can help to alleviate that situation.

The Augsburg man made a good impression when the Bundesliga side played Liverpool in the last-32 of the Europa League, and that well have been where he caught the club’s eye.

Klavan has extensive international experience too, albeit with Estonia, so he will be unfazed by playing at the highest level as Liverpool attempt to get back in the top four.
