In the build up to the next international fixtures for England much has been said about Manchester United star Wayne Rooney’s impending 100th international cap.
Rooney hasn’t always been universally loved but it’s hard to argue with the attitude that he has shown on the pitch for England, every time he has pulled on the jersey.
His coach at international level, Roy Hodgson, reckons that there is even more room for improvement at 29:
“I think he will (get better),” said Hodgson. “He has had a turbulent career in many ways, bursting on to the scene as the wonder kid at 17 and being the saviour of English football.
With 99 caps and 43 goals already we think that he will break the goal scoring record and become the most capped England player of all time before his career is up.
Hodgson spoke with conviction about the role that the Manchester United star has played during his time with England:
“All the qualities he had at 17 he basically still possesses but what he does have which he didn’t have at 17 or 24 or 25 is this incredible experience, this incredible belief and mental strength.
“He has accepted the responsibility at that young age of what being a key player for England means and at the age of 29 he is now got the incredible experience which is proven by the fact that he is about to win his 100th cap,”
Despite his ups and downs it would be very surprising if Rooney isn;t given a rapturous welcome when he steps out for that 100th cap against Slovenia on Saturday.
