Liverpool turned down the chance to sign a top defender this summer

Liverpool’s season is already falling into a disappointing pattern after a summer of relative optimism.

Although Jurgen Klopp was unable to bring in Virgil van Dijk, he did succeed in strengthening his squad with the additions of Mohamed Salah, Dominic Solanke, Andrew Robertson, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Unfortunately, it’s in defence that the Reds need the most change.

Dejan Lovren has had a poor start to the season and the sheer number of centre-back partnerships Klopp has experimented with in the last two years are just testament to the level of uncertainty at the back.

Once it became clear that Southampton were not going to be bullied into selling Van Dijk – an admirable stance considering the wantaway Dutchman’s own antics – Liverpool might have gone about identifying alternatives.

One such option was Neven Subotic, who won two Bundesliga titles under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund.

The Mirror report that the Merseyside outfit could have snapped up the Serbian this summer but decided against it because of his persistent injury problems.

The 28-year-old spent last season on loan at FC Koln, making just nine league starts.

While it must frustrate some Liverpool fans that the club turned down the chance to bag such an experienced, solid defender, the last thing they need is another centre-back who is going to be in and out of the first XI.
