Man City’s bid for Jonny Evans actually makes a lot of sense

Pep Guardiola has already spent over £130million on defenders this summer.

It appears Manchester City’s business is not yet over, however, with the BBC reporting they have seen an £18million bid rejected by West Brom for Jonny Evans.

The Baggies are desperate to keep hold of their captain, as while he may not be the most glamorous centre-back in the Premier League, he has been key to an impressively solid defence under Tony Pulis.

The Northern Irish international joined West Brom from Manchester United in 2015 and has attracted interest from Leicester and Arsenal since then.

Guardiola has perhaps learned the hard way that spending big is not necessarily the key after John Stones struggled last season following his switch from Everton.

Evans would be a particularly strong addition because he likes to pass out from the back and can adapt to different systems. With Kyle Walker, Danilo, and Benjamin Mendy having strengthened the full-back positions, centre-back is still a big weak spot.

City fans need only remind themselves of Evans’ performances at Euro 2016 to be convinced that a player who is not afraid to win the ball, who epitomises the sort of ‘no-nonsense’ approach that the club badly needs, would be a very shrewd addition indeed.
