Arsenal finally appear to be making some progress on tying Mesut Ozil down.
The club’s chief concern is keeping hold of Alexis Sanchez, but it would be disastrous if both their star attackers left in the same transfer window.
The Sun report that Ozil has now given an indication that he is ready to put pen to paper on a £225,000 a week extension, which represents a slight climbdown from his original demands of £250,000 a week.
No European clubs have come in for the playmaker and that has forced his hand slightly.
The Germany international is expected to feature in tonight’s Premier League opener against Leicester City.
As for Sanchez, the Daily Mail suggest Arsenal will make a last-ditch attempt to stop him leaving for Manchester City by offering him £300,000 a week. That would see him overtake Paul Pogba as English football’s most highly-paid player, but it may not be enough given his frustrations at Arsenal’s shortcomings last season.
