With the early signings of Bernardo Silva and Ederson, it looked as if Manchester City were going to have it all their own way in the summer window.
The transfer activity has somewhat dried up at the Etihad since then and most frustratingly, Pep Guardiola has missed out on one of his most crucial summer targets.
Dani Alves is reportedly close to signing for Paris Saint-Germain in a shock U-turn.
City desperately need new full-backs having released Pablo Zabaleta, Gael Clichy, and Bacary Sagna. And Tottenham will now be rubbing their hands at City’s desperation as they enter negotiations over Kyle Walker.
As for Alves, though, it’s especially infuriating for Guardiola as he worked with the Brazilian at Barcelona.
According to Goal, they met just last week when the City boss told him all about his plans for the club. It’s claimed that even as late as July 11, they believed the former Juventus man would fly out to meet them on their pre-season tour of the United States. The same day, they learned he was signing for PSG.
It’s a massive blow but one that will perhaps spur them into action as they look to fill their problem position.
