It’s been a quiet summer for Tottenham on the transfer front.
Mauricio Pochettino was never expected to overhaul his squad, but Spurs fans will be growing anxious for a few important additions to arrive.
A playmaker should be top of his list. The bench was worryingly thin on game-changers last season, particularly in light of Erik Lamela’s prolonged absence.
Ross Barkley seems the obvious solution, and the Sun have confirmed he is being monitored by Pochettino.
The difficulty is that the Toffees are holding out for £50million, a fee which Spurs are unwilling to meet.
Given that the England international has not signed a new contract, this is a saga that could rumble on, with Tottenham waiting until closer to the end of the window to force Everton to put the price down.
Ronald Koeman has already brought in a replacement in Davy Klaassen, and the Toffees will also need to free up some of their wage bill if widespread reports are correct in stating that Wayne Rooney will-resign from Manchester United by the end of the week.
