Virgil van Dijk could still move to Anfield this summer despite Liverpool officially withdrawing their interest.
The Reds were forced to apologise to Southampton after the Saints alleged they had illegally approached the Dutchman, and that appeared to signal the end of the saga.
However, the Daily Mail suggest he remains interested in a switch to Merseyside, as opposed to Chelsea who are preparing a £60million bid.
Chelsea are looking to replace John Terry, but it’s thought that Leonardo Bonucci of Juventus and Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng are the other options Antonio Conte is considering.
Should that fail, Nathan Ake, Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma are all still at the club.
As for Van Dijk, his future is effectively in his hands. If he chooses to force a move to Liverpool, then it will be difficult for Southampton to deny him his wish and he could follow in the footsteps of Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, and Sadio Mane, all of whom have transferred between the two clubs.
