Chelsea have begun talks with free agent Willy Caballero after the goalkeeper was released by Manchester City, reports the Daily Mail.
The Blues are looking for a new back-up for Thibaut Courtois following Asmir Begovic’s move to Bournemouth.
Caballero, 35, was something of a cult figure at the Etihad thanks to his heroics in the 2016 Capital One Cup final. The Argentine has also filled in for the inconsistent Claudio Bravo this season, making 24 starts and keeping eight clean sheets.
Pep Guardiola has already signed Ederson from Benfica in a £35million deal, breaking the world record fee for a goalkeeper. That would suggest Bravo will become number two unless he leaves the club altogether.
As for Caballero, the veteran stopper’s age may work in Chelsea’s favour, as he will not object to the limited game time which was the source of Begovic’s frustration at Stamford Bridge. He is understood to have other offers from Spain and Argentina.
Antonio Conte is also keen to bring in a striker to replace Diego Costa.
