Christian Eriksen scouted by one club since the turn of the year

Tottenham are approaching the business end of the season in the knowledge that their trophy drought looks likely to extend to 10 years.

Unless they overturn a four-point gap in the title race, Mauricio Pochettino’s men will end another season without silverware.

That is no reflection on the manager, nor really on any of the players. Pochettino’s project is all about patience and growth, the general idea being that trophies will come in time.

While the wait goes on, however, Spurs must convince their stars to persevere with the same vision.

The Lilywhites are bracing themselves for offers for several of their key players this summer, with Christian Eriksen the latest name being linked with a move away from White Hart Lane.

The Mirror report that Barcelona have been impressed with the Dane, who has more assists than any other Premier League player this season.

In the 4-2 defeat to Chelsea, his ball through to Dele Alli for the second goal was a thing of beauty.

It’s thought Barca have been watching Eriksen since the turn of the year as they see him as the perfect player to fit in behind Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Neymar.

With Luis Enrique set to depart at the end of the season, Barca will be rebuilding, especially having once again failed to make it past the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Eriksen is under contract at Spurs until 2020 and only signed a new deal last September, so it remains to be seen whether Barca have the appetite for a battle with Daniel Levy.

Which clubs in Europe have not been watching Spurs closely these past few seasons? How could such a collection of fine players, super-fit and so well coached by Mauricio Pochettino and his staff, not be watched by lovers of good football? It is all very much bigger than one club watching one player. Watching Spurs play is very much the point of playing for Spurs and supporting Spurs.
