Antoine Griezmann could be joined by one of his Atletico Madrid team-mates if he heads to Manchester United this summer.
As much as Jose Mourinho would like to sign the Frenchman, he appears to be placing increasing priority on bringing in a new defender.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Jose Gimenez could be the man they’re after.
The Atleti defender reportedly came close to signing for United back in January, before Mourinho decided it was best to wait until the summer.
Yet, injuries to Chris Smalling and Phil Jones over the international break will undoubtedly have played a role in convincing him of the need for another centre-back.
Diego Simeone’s side are in a difficult position when it comes to Gimenez. His contract includes a release clause of £56million, but if they don’t sell him this summer, he’ll be able to leave for free a year later.
Their transfer embargo means they won’t be able to sign an immediate replacement, but the fact that he has so little time left on his deal should play into United’s hands.
It’s also to their advantage that the Uruguayan is thought to be keen on a switch to Old Trafford.
