United to target one of Tottenham’s key men

Jose Mourinho has learned a valuable lesson from his first transfer dealings at Manchester United.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic may have been an instant hit at Old Trafford, but Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba both needed a little time to adapt to the Premier League.

That is likely to influence United’s spending going forward, as they look to target players with experience of English football this summer.

Yahoo Sport suggest that Toby Alderweireld is now on their list, as is Chelsea’s Willian, who of course worked under Mourinho at Stamford Bridge.

Tottenham are thought to be in the process of negotiating a new contract for their highly-rated centre-back, as they are keen to ensure he no longer has a release clause of just £25million.

The former Atletico Madrid and Southampton man is quite possibly the most influential defender in the league right now, partnering with international team-mate Jan Vertonghen.

Since Mauricio Pochettino has been adopting a 3-4-3 system, Alderweireld has been even more crucial as he has taken Eric Dier under his wing on that side of the defence.

United only signed a new centre-back themselves last summer in Eric Bailly, but Chris Smalling has not been convincing alongside him and Phil Jones is injured once again.
