After complaining all week about fixture congestion, Jose Mourinho will have been delighted to have escaped Middlesbrough with a 3-1 victory.
The sacking of the Portuguese’s close friend Aitor Karanka last week must have made it all the sweeter.
It was a surprisingly ill-tempered encounter, with a fracas breaking out in the second half.
That continued into the tunnel at half-time, with players from both sides going for each other.

The Manchester Evening News report that ‘Boro’s Ben Gibson had accused Eric Bailly of biting Rudy Gestede, though it definitely looked as if it was the other way round.
Bailly and Ashley Young appeared to be at the heart of the melee, but Jose Mourinho was nowhere to be seen as he had headed down the tunnel immediately after Antonio Valencia’s late goal.
Players from both clubs, and particularly Gestede, could now find themselves in hot water with the FA.
