It’s taken Romelu Lukaku a while to be taken seriously as a really top striker.
The Belgian is now Everton’s highest ever goalscorer in the Premier League, recently surpassing the great Duncan Ferguson.
Of course, while a lot of fans are only just waking up to this, Chelsea have had him on their radar for some time.
The Telegraph report that they have now received a massive boost, as the 23-year-old has stunned Everton by refusing to put pen to paper on a new £140,000 a week contract.
The Toffees seemed sure he would want to commit to Ronald Koeman’s impressive project, which is only in its first season.
Everton may be 7th, but there is a real possibility that they’ll challenge for the top four again next season like they used to under David Moyes.
However, Lukaku may want more than that.
It’s always been a sore point for him that he was kicked out of Stamford Bridge and deemed not good enough by Jose Mourinho. He could now return as a £60million player, if Antonio Conte thinks he’s worth that kind of fee.
If Diego Costa leaves Chelsea this summer, they’ll be looking for a bolshy, talismanic striker to take his place, so Lukaku could well be their man.
