United leading race for £40m Serie A target

After landing his first trophy as Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho must already have one eye on bigger and better things next season.

The Red Devils triumphed 3-2 in the EFL Cup final over Southampton at Wembley, with more eyebrows raised over their defence.

However, it appears that signing a new goalkeeper will be one of Mourinho’s priorities this summer.

According to the Mirror, United are beating Manchester City in the race for AC Milan’s highly-rated teenager Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The starlet only turned 18 at the weekend, but he has been hugely impressive for the resurgent Serie A giants.

That casts ever more doubt on the future of David de Gea, who is a long-term target of Real Madrid.

Los Blancos are likely to be in the market for a new stopper this summer, with Zinedine Zidane still yet to be convinced by current number one Keylor Navas.

De Gea may finally wish to return to his hometown, in which case United could recycle the money into a potential deal for Donnarumma – but they’ll have to beat City to his signature, and Pep Guardiola is still on the hunt for a proper replacement for Joe Hart.
