Arsene Wenger’s reluctance to sign big name players is a source of perennial frustration among some Arsenal fans.
The Gunners boss will always be praised in some quarters for refusing to dip into a market that holds little value, but he is berated by a section of the Emirates faithful in equal measure.
Despite the Frenchman’s known stance on over-spending, Arsenal have been consistently linked with Karim Benzema for several years.
Wenger’s compatriot never actually seems to leave Real Madrid though he’s constantly thought to be on his way out, and unsurprisingly, the rumours suggesting he could head for north London have reared their head again.
Now that Danny Welbeck is back – and back to scoring goals, hitting a first-half brace in the weekend’s 5-0 FA Cup win over Southampton – there is even less need for Arsenal to sign another striker.
And when asked why he is always linked with Benzema, Wenger joked to reporters:
“Because he is French?
“Maybe there are some noises he will leave Madrid. But there’s no need for us to buy any striker.
“On our front, we have a big squad and don’t need to buy. I believe that numbers and quality wise we have what is required.
Asked about the possibility of signing Benzema at the end of the season, he added:
“In the summer window? That’s not my worry at the moment. My worry is the next game against Watford.”
