It’s fair to say Anthony Martial has been one of the big casualties of Jose Mourinho’s first few months at Manchester United.
The Frenchman might not have received the same harsh treatment as Bastian Schweinsteiger or Memphis Depay, but his manager has made no bones about the fact that he hasn’t liked what he’s seen from him so far.
With the 21-year-old struggling against Liverpool, he was dropped for the Stoke game.
It remains to be seen whether he’ll be restored to the line-up for the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-final against Hull, which United go into with a 2-0 lead.
Regardless, though, Mourinho has fired a warning to the inconsistent starlet that he may have blown his chance to make an impact.
“I don’t think he (Martial) lost his focus,” he told reporters.
“I think he just didn’t take with both hands a big opportunity he had.
“When we spoke about Memphis Depay, we spoke about it being the only position where we have overbooking.”
While it’s great that Marcus Rashford is often given an opportunity on the wing, it’s worrying for Martial, who just can’t nail down a place in the starting XI.
The former Monaco man did score in consecutive matches earlier this month against Middlesbrough and Reading, but he seems to have a tendency to go missing when it really matters, like in the Liverpool game.
