Tottenham’s title hopes have been dealt a hefty blow after Jan Vertonghen was ruled out for up to two months with ankle ligament damage.
The centre-back was forced off in the 4-0 win over West Brom after turning awkwardly near the dugout, and Mauricio Pochettino confirmed in his post-match press conference that it looked bad.
According to the Sun, the 29-year-old has suffered a tear between grades two and three, so he is unlikely to return before the end of March.
Pochettino has been vindicated in his decision to keep Kevin Wimmer, as the Austrian may now be called upon to replace Vertonghen.
The Belgian’s injury may have scuppered Pochettino’s new system of playing three at the back, but it remains to be seen whether the Lilywhites boss will now change formation to allow more cover for whoever does come into the side.
Thanks to everyone for your kind messages. Gutted to be injured but will be back as soon as I can 🙏 #COYS

Wimmer did superbly last season when called upon for exactly the same reason. That Spurs did so well in Vertonghen’s absence then will give them hope, but it’s a huge blow nonetheless ahead of their trip to Manchester City this weekend.
