It hasn’t been the easiest of seasons for Marcus Rashford.
A lot of 19-year-olds would be delighted with six goals in all competitions at the halfway stage of their first full season with Manchester United, but it’s all been a little underwhelming after the progress he made last term.
In defence of the England international, he is no longer regularly playing up front, as that position has been nailed down by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Yet, the starlet clearly doesn’t resent the Swedish superstar, and has in fact named him as one of the two players he most looks up to at the club.
Speaking at a boot launch in Munich, Rashford said, per Goal.com:
“Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] and [Wayne] Rooney are the two that stand out the most.
“Obviously I’ve grown up watching Rooney week in week, week out since I was young. They are the two you look at and try to emulate.”
It looks as if United will take up the option to extend Ibrahimovic’s one-year contract by a further 12 months, the striker having scored his 19th goal of the season in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool.
In the long term, though, Rashford may well prove a worthy successor to the 35-year-old.
Referring to Ibrahimovic, he added:
“For the young players coming up to see his character and the way he approaches every game and his mentality, it’s invaluable.
“Some players can’t bring that when they move clubs so we have to try and learn from him while he’s here and take what we can out of his game.”
