Manchester City targeting Tottenham defender

Mauricio3

Mauricio Pochettino will be reluctant to let many of his players go this January.

On current form, Tottenham look like the one team most likely to push Chelsea all the way for the title, and they’ve been able to achieve that thanks to their strength-in-depth.

However, according to the Sun, Manchester City are about to make them an offer that the Lilywhites might have to bite their hand off at.

£20million for Ben Davies. Yes, really.

The 23-year-old has no chance of ousting Danny Rose from the first team and has been confined to playing in the cups, but City appear to rate him so highly that they are willing to spend serious money on the reserve.

The 4-0 defeat to Everton on Sunday further highlighted Pep Guardiola’s defensive worries, and he is now on the hunt for reinforcements after missing out on Bayern Munich’s Holger Badstuber, who has headed to Schalke on loan.

Vincent Kompany’s injury problems mean he rarely features for City, which begs the question why Guardiola is targeting a left-back.

However, it’s Davies’ versatility that City want, as he can – just about – play in the centre of defence too.

The Welshman came on for Jan Vertonghen after the Belgian was forced off with a nasty-looking ankle injury in the 4-0 win over West Brom. Yet, that could also be a sticking point for Spurs.

Pochettino is still waiting to hear back on the severity of Vertonghen’s injury, and if he is to face a long spell on the sidelines, Spurs can’t afford to let one of their main back-up defenders leave.

No way, now with Vertonghen injured Davies will be too valuable, not only as Rose’s backup, but also able to play the left side central back in a threesome- as he did for Wales in their recent run to the Euro semis.

Very true – however, if City offered £20million, is that too good an offer to turn down?
