Why Luke Shaw faces a critical five months at Man United

Eagle-eyed Manchester United fans will have spotted a conspicuous absentee from their squad that beat Reading 2-0 in the FA Cup last weekend.

It was inevitable that Jose Mourinho wouldn’t field his absolute best XI, but Luke Shaw wasn’t even deemed worthy of a place on the bench.

This seems to be the culmination of a continuing downwards trend for the left-back, who last made an appearance for the Red Devils in November.

According to the Mirror, he is now facing a battle to save his United career having failed to impress his manager.

The 21-year-old started Mourinho’s reign as the club’s first choice in his position, but Daley Blind, Matteo Darmian, and even Marcos Rojo have all taken his place since then.

It’s nearly three years since Shaw joined from Southampton in a £27million deal, but his awful leg break in 2015 seems to have hampered his development.

And in that vein, Mourinho is now already thought to be weighing up transfer targets for the summer as he wants a more consistent left-back. Shaw therefore has just five months to convince him he already has one.
