Spurs will be out for revenge when they meet Chelsea on Wednesday night.
The bad feeling between the two clubs is still running high after May’s 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge, and while they have met once since, there is more riding on this fixture than ever.
The Blues prevented Mauricio Pochettino’s side from winning their first league title in 55 years last season, but Tottenham can now stop Chelsea from making their own history.
If Antonio Conte can steer his side to victory, Chelsea will equal Arsenal’s Premier League record of 14 wins in a row, achieved back in 2002. While for the Gunners, it ran across two seasons, the Blues will have achieved it in one campaign.
Spurs are out to make sure it’s not as straightforward as that. Harry Kane, who scored twice in the New Year’s Day thrashing of Watford, told the Evening Standard:
“We don’t want to be the team who lets them equal that record.
“That is in our minds and we were talking about it in the changing room after the Watford game (which Spurs won 4-1 on Sunday), so we are fully focused.
Spurs have Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker back from suspension, while Mousa Dembele is also expected to start – preferably without poking Diego Costa in the eye this time around.
While they have the added motivation of halting the Premier League’s form side’s run, they also need to focus on their own ambitions. Three points would cut the gap between Spurs and the league-leaders to seven points, which is far from insurmountable with half the season still to go.
